Firefox 147 introduces automatic Picture-in-Picture

Firefox 147 introduces a new browsing option that automates the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) experience. When enabled, this feature detects when a user switches away from a tab that is currently playing a video and automatically launches that video into a separate, floating window. This eliminates the need for manual activation, allowing for a more seamless transition during multitasking. To use this, users can navigate to the “Browsing” section of the settings menu and check the box labeled “Maintain PiP video playback even when switching tabs.”

Firefox 147 performance and security updates

Firefox 147 provides a substantial performance boost for systems equipped with AMD GPUs. The update enables “zero-copy playback” for hardware-decoded video, bringing the efficiency of AMD systems in line with Intel and NVIDIA configurations. On the security front, the browser has migrated to the Safe Browsing V5 protocol and implemented stricter local network access limits. These measures ensure that public websites must now receive explicit permission before accessing resources on a user’s private home or office network.

Firefox 147 release and installation guide

Firefox 147 is currently being distributed via the browser’s automatic update system as of January 14, 2026. Users can manually trigger the update by selecting “Help” and then “About Firefox” from the main menu. For new installations, the latest version is available directly from the official Mozilla website. This release includes 16 security fixes, seven of which are classified as “High” severity, making it a critical update for maintaining digital safety and stability on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
