Xiaomi 17 Ultra global launch and everything Xiaomi brought to MWC 2026

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra global launch at MWC 2026 in Barcelona has finally happened, and it gives us a clear look at how the company plans to handle its high-end portfolio outside of China. On February 28, the curtains went up on two flagship devices that have been circulating in the rumor mill since their late 2025 debut in their home market. We are looking at the Xiaomi 17 and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, both of which are now heading to Europe, the UK, and other major regions. While the hardware is mostly what we expected, there are some specific changes made for the global audience that are worth noting, especially regarding battery capacity and regional certification requirements.

The standard Xiaomi 17 and its compact power

The smaller of the two, the Xiaomi 17, is positioning itself as a powerhouse for people who do not want a massive brick in their pocket. It features a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display. That 1.5K resolution is sharp enough for a screen this size, and the 120 Hz refresh rate is basically the industry standard now. What stands out is the peak brightness of 3,500 nits. In plain English, you could probably see this screen clearly while standing in the middle of a desert at noon.

Under the hood, Xiaomi is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This is the top-tier silicon for 2026, and they are pairing it with either 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM. For storage, you are looking at 256 GB or 512 GB. It is a straightforward, high-performance package.

One thing that has caused some chatter is the battery. The Chinese version of this phone launched with a massive 7,000 mAh battery. However, the global model carries a 6,330 mAh silicon carbon battery. While that is still a very large capacity for a 6.3-inch phone, it is a noticeable step down from the original Chinese variant. Xiaomi is likely adjusting to meet different regional safety or weight requirements. You still get 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, so it will top up quickly.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra and that 200 MP periscope

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra global launch is really about the camera. This device is significantly larger with a 6.9-inch OLED display and bezels that are almost invisible. It runs the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 but pushes the storage options up to 1 TB for the power users.

The camera system is where the “Ultra” moniker earns its keep. There are four sensors on the back, all tuned by Leica. The main sensor is a 50 MP 1-inch type LOFIC sensor. The “1-inch” part is important because it allows the phone to capture more light and detail, behaving more like a professional camera than a traditional smartphone. But the headline feature for many will be the 200 MP HPE periscope telephoto lens. This lens offers continuous optical zoom from 75 mm to 100 mm.

Instead of using digital trickery to fill in the gaps, it actually moves the glass to get you closer to the subject.

Like its smaller sibling, the Ultra has seen a battery reduction for the global market. The capacity sits at 6,000 mAh, which is 800 mAh less than the version sold in China. It supports 90W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. It is a bit thicker at 8.29 mm and weighs about 218 grams, giving it a substantial feel in the hand.

A massive ecosystem expansion

Xiaomi did not just stop at phones during the MWC event. They dropped a whole suite of products to fill out their “Human x Car x Home” ecosystem. One of the most interesting additions is the Xiaomi Tag. It is very similar to an AirTag and is designed to help you track your keys, bags, or anything else you might lose.

They also introduced the Xiaomi Watch 5 and the Redmi Buds 8 Pro. For those who need more screen real estate, the Xiaomi Pad 8 and Pad 8 Pro made their global debut. These tablets are designed to compete in the high-end space, offering better productivity features than their predecessors. On the more mobile side of things, they launched an ultra-slim magnetic powerbank and the Electric Scooter 6 Ultra, which seems to be their most robust scooter to date.

The move to India

For those of us tracking the Asian markets, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra global launch was just the first step. Xiaomi has officially confirmed that the Xiaomi 17, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and the Xiaomi Pad 8 will arrive in India on March 11, 2026.

Interestingly, there is no word on the Xiaomi 17 Pro for global or Indian markets yet. It seems Xiaomi is focusing on the two extremes: the standard model and the Ultra. Early reports suggest the Indian version of the standard 17 might stick with the 6,300 mAh battery seen in the global version rather than the 7,000 mAh Chinese unit.

The phones ship with Android 16 and Xiaomi’s own HyperOS 3. They both carry an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and use Xiaomi Shield Glass to protect the displays. Whether you are looking for the massive zoom capabilities of the Ultra or the high-brightness screen of the standard model, the global rollout is now officially underway.

Global Release: Rolling out across Europe and the UK starting March 2026.
