YouTube Shorts introduces AI digital twin cloning for creators
YouTube Shorts is set to receive a major update that enables creators to post content using a digital version of themselves. While a specific launch date has not been confirmed, the feature is expected to function similarly to other advanced generative video applications. These systems typically require a short selfie video and an audio sample to build a photorealistic 3D avatar. This avatar can then be placed into various AI-generated scenarios, allowing creators to produce high-quality vertical videos without needing to be physically present for every recording session.
YouTube Shorts disclosure and content quality
YouTube Shorts will maintain strict transparency standards regarding the use of these digital twins. CEO Neal Mohan emphasized that any realistic altered or synthetic content must be clearly disclosed by the creator and will be labeled by the platform. To address concerns about “AI slop” or low-quality repetitive content, YouTube is adapting its existing spam-fighting systems to ensure that AI-generated Shorts do not degrade the overall viewing experience. The company also intends to provide creators with new tools to specifically manage how their likeness is used across the ecosystem.
YouTube Shorts additional feature updates
YouTube Shorts continues to see massive growth, currently averaging 200 billion views per day as of early 2026. Alongside the digital twin announcement, the platform is introducing several other features, including the ability for parents to set strict time limits on Shorts scrolling for children and teens. Other upcoming tools include a text-to-game feature and expanded auto-dubbing in over 20 languages. These updates are part of a broader push to integrate generative AI into the creator workflow, building on existing tools like Dream Screen and the YouTube Create mobile app.
