New survival horror game Silver Pines coming to Steam

Silver Pines is a newly announced title that aims to carve out a unique niche in the indie horror scene by combining several disparate influences. Set in a semi-abandoned town, the game follows private investigator Red Walker as he searches for a missing musician named Eddie Velvet. What begins as a standard missing persons case quickly spirals into a surreal and nightmarish ordeal. The developers at Wych Elm have explicitly cited a desire to create an atmosphere that feels like a cross between the psychological horror of Silent Hill and the “Lynchian” absurdity found in Twin Peaks.

Visually, Silver Pines stands out for its bold aesthetic choices. The game uses a 2.5D perspective, featuring 3D environments paired with 2D character models. These characters are animated with a deliberately low frame rate, giving the game a distinct comic book or “old-cartoon” feel. This stylized character art clashes with the high-fidelity, detailed 3D backgrounds, which include realistic water reflections and natural environments. This visual contrast is intended to heighten the sense of unease and emphasize the otherworldly nature of the game’s central mystery.

In terms of gameplay, Silver Pines adheres to classic survival horror principles while incorporating non-linear progression. Resources like ammunition and medical supplies are scarce, forcing players to be methodical and selective about engaging in combat. The “Metroidvania navigation” means that players will frequently encounter locked doors and environmental obstacles that require specific items or abilities to overcome. This structural choice encourages thorough exploration of the town and rewards players who can manage their limited inventory while uncovering the dark history of the titular Silver Pines.

While a specific release date has not been confirmed, Silver Pines is currently slated for a 2026 launch on Steam. The project is being published by Team17, a company known for supporting innovative indie titles. Given the recent success of similar genre-fusing horror games like Signalis, Silver Pines has already garnered significant attention from fans of both retro survival horror and modern narrative-driven adventures. As development continues, more details are expected regarding the game’s combat mechanics and the true nature of Red Walker’s connection to the town.
