The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park brings a darker story to New York
The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park takes players into a darker New York
The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park is the next major DLC for Ubisoft’s The Division 2, and it takes the game into a part of New York that has never been explored in the series before.
The expansion launches on November 3 for PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It adds Central Park and parts of the Upper West Side to the game, while telling a story built around fear, rumours and an unknown threat.
But the most interesting part of the Central Park expansion is not simply the new location. Ubisoft is changing the way the story is told and how players experience the area.
Instead of immediately knowing what is happening, players will have to piece together the truth while dealing with rumours about a new virus variant and a mysterious force operating inside the park.
Central Park is no longer the place you remember
In The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park, Central Park has been completely transformed.
The park is now heavily overgrown, with nature spreading into parts of the surrounding city. The expansion also covers the Upper West Side, including the area from Lincoln Square towards the Dakota District.
For players familiar with New York, this means locations that are normally busy and recognisable will look very different.
The park itself has an especially grim history. It was used as a mass burial ground during the outbreak, and the people who were last known to be there have disappeared.
Now, something else appears to have taken control of the area.
The Division eventually intercepts a distress signal coming from deep inside Central Park. That signal sends SHD agents into the park to find out what happened and investigate the rumours surrounding the area.

The story is built around fear and rumours
One of the more unusual changes in this The Division 2 DLC is the way the story is presented.
The entire adventure is told as a flashback, with a narrator guiding players through her version of what happened.
The central idea is fairly simple. People are afraid of something they do not understand. Rumours spread, people disappear, and eventually those rumours begin to feel like reality.
That gives the expansion a different tone from a straightforward mission-based story. Players are not simply being told what the threat is. They have to discover what is actually happening in Central Park.
The story takes place during the summer following Warlords of New York, so it also fits into the existing timeline of The Division 2.
Three companions will fight alongside you
The Central Park expansion also introduces three characters who can accompany your agent during missions.
Each companion has a different background and combat role.
- Brayleigh Callahan is a sniper. She is an MIT graduate and an Olympic shooting medallist.
- Elwood Franklin is a protector who previously worked as a mall security guard and hopes to become an NYPD officer.
- Morse Feeney is an assault specialist and former first-wave Division agent. His past is more mysterious, and his history appears to be connected to the wider story.
These characters are not simply extra NPCs following you around. Players will need to help them deal with their own fears before they become reliable companions.
You can also change which companion joins you when replaying missions. Their different reactions can change how those missions feel on another playthrough.
A new survival-focused endgame
The The Division 2 new expansion is also changing what happens after the main story.
When players first enter Central Park, they will not have all the information or tools they need. The idea is to make the player feel more like prey than a fully equipped SHD agent.
There is no GPS to guide you, and enemies will continue to put pressure on you while you learn more about the park.
As you explore and collect better gear, that relationship changes. You gradually become the hunter instead of the hunted.
The expansion also introduces encounters where your performance can affect what happens later. Doing well can give you exclusive rewards, while performing poorly can create disadvantages for the next stage.
This gives players a reason to return to Central Park even after completing the main campaign.
Six new skill variants and new gear
Echoes of Central Park adds six new skill variants. Two examples mentioned by Ubisoft are the Corrosive Trap and Gas Bomber, both inspired by the threats found in the expansion.
There is also a new Exotic weapon called The Ratel, along with a new gear set.
For players who enjoy building different loadouts, these additions could be one of the more important parts of the DLC. The new skills and gear are tied to the threats introduced in Central Park, rather than simply being cosmetic additions.
Players below Level 40 will also receive a boost that lets them start the expansion without first having to reach the level normally expected for the content.
The DLC can be played alone or with other players in co-op.
When does The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park release?
The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park releases on November 3 for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
It will be available through the Ubisoft Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Players who pre-order the DLC will receive the NY Purifier Mask when the expansion launches.
There is also a Deluxe Edition that includes outfits inspired by the three companions and a skin for the new Exotic weapon.
What players should know
At its core, The Division 2 Echoes of Central Park is adding much more than another set of missions.
The expansion introduces a new section of New York, a story told through a flashback, three companions, six skill variants, new gear and an endgame that changes depending on how players perform during encounters.
More importantly, Central Park gives The Division 2 a setting that can support a different kind of story. The familiar streets of New York are still there, but they have been taken over by nature, abandoned people and rumours about something that players do not fully understand.
Whether the mysterious threat turns out to be what the rumours suggest is one of the main questions players will have to answer when Echoes of Central Park arrives on November 3.
